Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies programmes
On
26th January 1994, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) abolished
a gruesome practice of killing stray dogs. This giant step resulted
from numerous meetings and discussions with various Non-Government
Organisations (NGOs), including the BSPCA. For several years now,
the Hospital has implemented the Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies
(ABC/AR) Programme along with the other NGOs. A separate ward that
can accommodate 30 dogs at a time has been established for the sterilization
project.
Today, the BMC still continues to nab stray dogs but their modus
operandi has changed. These dogs are deposited with the BSPCA and
other NGOs where they are looked after, sterilized, branded for easy
identification and vaccinated against rabies before being returned
to their original habitat. Dogs apart, even larger animals like buffaloes
are regularly vaccinated against diseases.
